CAREW Cheriton Control Tower is getting ready to host its annual festival of all things military early next month.

The Wings Over Carew festival is held over the weekend of August 5 and 6. Now in its fifth year, the festival celebrates all things military, with aviation history at its heart.

There’s plenty to see from 10am on the Saturday and Sunday, with many stalls and exhibits, including a fine display of vintage armed vehicles, classic cars and the emergency services.

The ever-popular static Spitfire, complete with an original cockpit and a working Merlin engine, which will be fired up during the event; will be returning to its prime location next to the control tower.

New attractions for 2017 include The Imps, a motorcycle display team who will perform on the Saturday; while Sunday will see the Welsh Horse Yeomanry with the Welsh Horse musical ride display performed by horses.

There’s plenty more in the packed programme, including the Welsh Army Reserves Transport Regiment, the ATC and cadet bands, Swansea Pipe Band and the Welsh Tommies re-enactment group.

While there’s plenty to keep the crowds entertained, the two-day event will also have poignant moments.

On both Saturday and Sunday, there will be a short memorial service to pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the wars. There will be a guard of honour, the British Legion and cadet, bands with John Brock MBE receiving the salute on behalf of the control tower group.

Tickets to the Wings over Carew festival are priced £8 for adults, under 16s - £1 and free for children under 5, with concessions £6.

The control tower itself is open on Sundays and Bank Holidays from July through to September from 10am till 3pm.
