A security guard had to be tasered after crashing into a Haverfordwest roundabout, a court has heard.

Sam Wilkins, 34, of Gordon Street, Pembroke Dock, pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal alcohol limit when he appeared before Haverfordwest magistrates on Tuesday.

The bench heard that Wilkins misjudged the Cardigan Road roundabout and drove straight over the structure at around 10.45pm on June 18, demolishing a road sign and damaging the front of his Ford Fiesta.

Vaughan Pritchard-Jones said: “He drove away from the scene.

"When police attended to speak to the defendant he clenched his fist and moved towards the officers inviting them to fight.

“They had to taser him to bring him under control.”

Wilkins claimed to have drunk whisky and wine after parking his car, and a reading of 40mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath while driving was agreed by the defence and prosecution, the legal limit is 35mg.

Mark Layton, defending, told the court that Wilkins had been ‘shaken up’ after the accident and had helped himself to drinks at home.

He said: “He drank a quantity at home, which meant at the time of driving he was 40mg, so it’s at the lowest possible end of the scale.”

Mr Layton added that Wilkins would be unable to continue working as a security guard without his driving licence, which was ‘crucial’ to his job.

“He apologises for his behaviour. Mr Wilkins was going through some difficulties at the time and took the brunt of his frustration out on his friend and the police officers. He wishes to publicly and sincerely apologise.”

Magistrates banned him from driving for 12 months and fined him £350. He was ordered to pay £115 in court costs and charges.
