NEARLY 300 pupils from 50 Pembrokeshire Primary Schools enthralled a packed audience at the Primary Prom concert held recently.

After receiving a day’s music tuition from the Pembrokeshire Music Service staff, a choir, wind band and orchestra performed a variety of tunes that showcased the musical skills of the youngsters.

The Primary Prom Choir, conducted by Sarah Benbow and accompainied by Sharalyn Jenkins sang hit songs by The Carpenters and Alesso, among others, with the Wind Band playing up-beat tunes such as Funkytown and Happy by Pharrell Williams.

Valero Primary School Music Festival ensembles winners, The Roch trumpet trio played their winning piece: What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor, and Overall Open Soloist Winner Dylan Sanders Swales played his winning piece on the drum kit, Brazil Overture.

The Orchestra, conducted by Joanne Underwood, played Balmages’ Fanfare and Fireworks brilliantly and there was a superb conclusion to the evening with all perfomers playing Abba’s iconic Dancing Queen.

Pembrokeshire Music Service co-ordinator Gareth Sanders-Swales said: “We have incredibly talented teachers and performers in Pembrokeshire and this was on show for everyone to see and the feedback from the event has been superb, which is a great boost to everyone involved.”

A presentation was also made to longstanding Pembrokeshire Music Service tutor, Iris Thirkettle, who is leaving the services after 27 years of teaching strings.
