CHANGES to one of Haverfordwest's busiest roundabouts have got drivers in a spin.

Resurfacing work at Bridgend Square Roundabout, near Morrisons supermarket, has also seen road markings introduced.

But the lines, indicating which lane drivers should use to exit the roundabout, are already causing confusion.

"It's a nightmare," said driving instructor Simon Mottram.

Simon, who runs Fast Track Driving School, said he witnessed five near-miss collisions in just a few minutes this morning (Friday).

"It's really confusing, even for local drivers," he said.

"I had to go back around three times just to check I had seen it right.

"Everyone’s going for the same lane and it's causing a massive funnel neck."

He added: "I'm assuming in the next few days there’s going to be a few car clips.

"The only positive thing is that it’s now clarified that the left lane is for St Davids and Morrissons."

Simon said that he has always advised drivers heading alongside the multi-storey car park to take the right-hand lane if heading onto Sydney Rees Way, which leads to Withybush Hospital.

But doing this now leaves drivers trapped in a short overtaking lane, with traffic continuing to enter the road from their left.

"If you're leaving gaps, you're leaving temptation for other drivers," said Simon.

"I don't know what the purpose of that lane is, it just encourages people to speed up so they can overtake.

"And coming Withybush to go to St Clears, it’s forcing you really wide to the left, so it looks like you're heading up Prendergast.

"It's so dangerous. It's a recipe for disaster."

A spokesman for Pembrokeshire County Council said the intention of the new road markings was to "make the roundabout safer for users by slowing the speed of the traffic negotiating it".

"The lines also provide additional clarity for drivers, thereby assisting them in negotiating their correct lane on the roundabout," he added.

"For example new markings will direct a road user - coming from the direction of the Salutation Square roundabout - to approach the Bridgend roundabout in the right hand lane if it is the driver’s intention to exit onto Sydney Rees Way.

"This is the correct procedure.

"We will monitor the effectiveness of the new markings ahead of the planned resurfacing of the Bridgend roundabout next year."

The council has confirmed that there are no plans to erect traffic lights on the roundabout.
