WELSH funnyman Rhod Gilbert has taken centre stage in Pembrokeshire to spearhead a £6,000-plus fundraising night for the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff.

He teamed up with Saundersfoot Community Council chairman Anthony Mattick to stage a comedy quiz in the village's Regency Hall last Sunday night.

The pair's friendship goes back to their schooldays in Carmarthen and yesterday (Wednesday) they and friends flew out to Peru to start a sponsored trek to Machu Picchu, also in aid of Velindre.

The quiz attracted 32 teams who were entertained with quips, cryptic questions and on-stage antics from Rhod, Chris 'Korkey' Corcoran and friends Ed and Clint.

After the cracker-eating, Will Smith tribute singing and lookalike competitions, a raffle and auction were held.

Together with the successful bid for a kicking masterclass with Neil Jenkins, Dan Biggar and Leigh Halfpenny, over £6,000 was raised during the night.

With previous events, held in conjunction with Greenhill School, Tenby, this brings the grand local total to just under £9,000.

The money raised will be included with the proceeds of Rhod's comedy event at the Wales Millennium Centre, which raised over £60,000.

Said Anthony: "The feedback from those attending the quiz was extremely positive, and it was a real treat and privilege to have such a well-known performer in our village.

"Thanks must go to Pembrokeshire Wealth Management of Saundersfoot and local fisherman Gavin Davies for their financial assisdtance, as well as Little & Large Lite Bites; Gail and Emma at the Regency Hall and Dom and staff at Saundersfoot Sports and Social Club."
