A drunk Narberth man smashed an ashtray over his own head before subjecting police to a stream of threats and foul language.

Daniel Adam Edwards, of Old Mart Ground, pleaded guilty to resisting a constable in the execution of his duty and two charges of criminal damage when he appeared before Haverfordwest magistrates on Tuesday.

The court heard that Edwards went out drinking after attending his grandfather’s funeral on February 14.

Vaughan Pritchard-Jones, prosecuting, said: “He was in the smoking area of the pub when for some reason he picked up an ashtray and smashed it over his own head.

“He pushed over a table which had glasses on, causing them to smash, and was seen to walk out of the pub and wander down the street.”

Police described Edwards, 24, as ‘clearly under the influence of alcohol’ when they found him, as he was unsteady on his feet with slurred speech.

There was a struggle as he attempted to break free of the officers, and PS Howells’ glasses fell to the ground as he pushed past.

Mr Pritchard-Jones added: “He used a stream of foul, abusive and threatening language towards the officers.

“The officers had to apply leg restraints to stop him from kicking out. When put in to the police van he head-butted the inside. He calmed down when he got to custody.”

The court heard that Edwards had no recollection of the incident because he was drunk, but had apologised for his behaviour.

Mike Kelleher, defending, said: “Mr Edwards was in a very emotional condition. He was very close to his grandfather, he had been to his funeral and had too much to drink.”

He added that if Edwards had been able to go home to ‘sleep it off’ as he planned, he would have simply returned to the pub to apologise the following morning, and that may have been the end of the matter.

Magistrates fined Edwards a total of £180 and ordered him to pay £149 compensation for the police officer’s glasses. He will also pay £85 costs and a £30 surcharge. The pub did not make any claim for compensation.
