HAVERFORDWEST and St David’s Air Training Crops Squadron has won a prestigious national competition.

Cadet Sergeant Rhoswyn Lewis, Cadet Sergeant Mary Anne Johns and Cadet William Letten won the RAF100 competition, which was sponsored by Air Officer Wales, Air Commodore Adrian Williams to mark the centenary of the RAF.

The three cadets will go on to present their project to the First Minister in the Senedd as part of the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the RAF in Wales.

“It is a real honour for the team to be going to Senedd in Cardiff to represent our Squadron and the Air Cadets in the RAF100 celebrations in Wales,” said Cadet Sergeant Johns.

“We are all very excited about it.”

Each of the three Royal Air Force Air Cadet Wings in Wales selected a project to go forward to the national competition in Llandrindod Wells on Sunday, April 15.

The 948 Squadron project centred on the flying boat base in located at Fishguard Harbour during the First World War.

The base was established in March 1917 by the Royal Naval Air Service to counter the threat of German U-Boat attacks on shipping in the Irish Sea.

The threat from the German U-Boats was so effective that it led to the introduction of rationing in Great Britain in 1918 and could have led to Britain being knocked out of the war through food shortages.

Research for the project was undertaken by cadets at 948 Squadron supported by adult volunteers Flight Lieutenant Paul Childs, Civilian Instructor Dave Pengilly, and Flying Officer Keith Jones.

Research activities included a visit to Fishguard Harbour to see the remains of the flying boat station courtesy of Stena Line, and a visit to the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton to see the examples of the aircraft that would have flown from Fishguard during World War 1.

The Squadron parades on Tuesdays and Fridays at the Dalton VC Centre Haverfordwest and anyone wishing to join them should contact 01437 767 030.
