Hitting a woman with a beer can and causing more than £1,700 of damage to her home has resulted in a prison sentence for a Narberth man.

Angelo Edwards, of Garfield Gardens, was due to stand trial at Haverfordwest magistrates court on Wednesday, May 9, but pleaded guilty to assault and criminal damage at the start of the hearing.

Vaughan Pritchard-Jones, prosecuting, told the court that Edwards tipped a can of lager over his girlfriend’s head during an argument, while the pair drank at her Crymych house on April 8.

She put her hands up to cover her face before he punched her a number of times, and he then hit her on her head with the crumpled can, causing a cut which dripped blood down her neck.

The woman ran out of the property, and police arrived to the sound of banging inside the house.

Officers entered to find a ‘considerable amount of damage’ had been caused to structure of the property and items inside.

Photographs shown to the bench revealed substances smeared over walls and floors, a sink full of electrical items, plus damaged furniture, carpets and other items.

Edwards, 33, had also painted a swear word on a wall.

Mr Pritchard-Jones added that Edwards was subject to a suspended sentence at the time of the offence.

He said: “Wanton damage was caused to the property.”

Jonathan Webb, defending, said: “Both parties had been drinking, a row ensued and Mr Edwards lost his temper.”

Mr Webb added that the victim was not seeking a restraining order.

Magistrates activated six weeks of Edwards’ suspended sentence and added a further eight weeks for the new offences.

He was also ordered to pay £1,710 in compensation to the landlord, £200 costs and a £115 surcharge. The court heard that he already owed fines of more than £3,373.
