HORSERIDERS have taken to the streets of Neyland to remind driver to take great care when passing by on busy roads.

Led by local rider Penny Joubert, the Pass Wide, Pass Slow campaign’s most recent event took place today (Sunday, May 20) starting from Brunel Quay, Neyland.

"We just want to get the word out there about passing horses wide and slow on the roads," she said before the event.

According to road safety service Think! 11 horse riders were killed and 116 seriously injured in collisions with motor vehicles, in the five years to 2015.

To ensure their own safety when taking to the roads riders are actively encouraged to wear high visibility clothing, and only to ride in suitable conditions

For their part, drivers should also be aware that sounding their horn, revving their engine, or overtaking with insufficient space can startle horses, posing a risk to them, their owners, and other road users.

The riders were joined by Dyfed-Powys Police officers, and local MP Stephen Crabb.

Dyfed-Powys Police PCSO Jude Parr said all drivers should pay respect to horse riders in an attempt to keep Pembrokeshire roads a safer and more pleasurable place to ride.

She said: “We are contacted on a regular basis by concerned riders who have experienced 'near misses' and who have been affected by such frightening experiences and for many they do not have a choice other than to ride along our roads in order to access bridleways and more open spaces."

Stephen Crabb MP said: "It was great to see such a strong turn-out of riders from Pembrokeshire Bridleways & Byways Association for the ‘Pass Wide and Slow’ campaign.

"The numbers of accidents on British roads caused by drivers not slowing down when passing riders are still far too high.

"As well as raising awareness of the issue, the campaign also aims to strengthen the law so that drivers are actually required to show due consideration to horses and riders. I will be backing this campaign in Parliament."
