A HUSBAND and wife from Milford Haven have been presented with British Empire Medals for services to Withybush Hospital’s Chemotherapy Day Unit.

By December 2017, Bernie and Trish George raised more than £200,000 towards the cost of a new haematology and oncology unit at the hospital, through the Withybush Hospital Cancer Day Unit Appeal charity, and have now clocked up almost £400,000 in total.

According to the Honour citation, the unit - which opened in early 2017 - has transformed the experience of cancer sufferers throughout Pembrokeshire.

The citation continued: "Their work together has been exemplary in the field of fundraising, using Facebook and social media to enhance their fundraising activities, as well as a You Tube video made to promote and drive work on the unit."

The couple who live in Hakin, were presented with their medals by Lord-Lieutenant of Dyfed Sara Edwards, in a ceremony at County Hall on Monday.

The Lord-Lieutenant heard the couple began their charity work after the death of their daughter Nia from leukaemia in 2004.

To support their fundraising efforts they opened a shop in Haverfordwest, donating 98 pence for every £1 spent towards improvements at Withybush.

Speaking about the accolade, Mr George said: “We are honoured to receive this medal, and we accept it on behalf of our 20 volunteers.

“It is difficult enough to have to deal with a cancer diagnosis, but at least patients are now going to a good place."
