Our reporter was told two bottles of a questionable substance were reported on the path leading around the back of the castle, which has been cordoned off.

Pembroke Castle remains open to the public, and the car park has now been re-opened to the public, although a cordon remains in place behind the castle.

A police spokesman, said: “Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of suspicious containers found at Pembroke Castle at around 1.10pm today (Friday, July 20).

“Enquiries are continuing into the incident.

"The containers have been retrieved and will be sent for forensic examination.

"An initial assessment has determined that they do not contain any suspicious or dangerous liquid.

"No one came to any harm during this incident.

"Dyfed-Powys Police would like to thank members of the public for their patience while this time-consuming, but necessary work was carried out.”

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue said: "At 1.17pm, firefighters from Pembroke Dock attended an incident in Castle Terrace, Pembroke.

"Firefighters assisted the police in cordoning off the area and left the incident at 3.33pm."

Police are also understood to have left the scene now.

Second time in two weeks

Last weekend the castle was shut after reports of an "unknown substance" at the castle.

It emerged that a bottle bearing the word Novichok had been discovered.

Fire crews, police and the Welsh Ambulance Trust's Hazardous Area Response team were on hand last weekend to deal with the potentially dangerous material.

Members of the fire service were seen to be wearing hazardous materials suits, on standby to help remove the suspicious object, and a decontamination tent was also set up.

Tomorrow, Pembroke is due to host its annual river rally event.
