POLICE have said a woman tried to help a man who has gone missing in the River Cleddau but returned to shore alone.
The man went missing after experiencing difficulties while swimming in the River Cleddau, near the Neyland Marina yesterday (Sunday).
A spokesperson from Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Dyfed-Powys Police is currently involved in an extensive multi-agency search after two people got into difficulties in the water at Neyland Marina yesterday.
“It is believed a man entered the water on Sunday afternoon and got into trouble, with a woman attempting to assist. She returned to shore alone.
“Efforts are now focusing on tracing the man.
“The call came into HM Coastguard at around 3.45pm on Sunday, July 29.
"A multi-agency search and rescue was commenced, including HM Coastguard’s search and rescue helicopter from St Athan, along with Angle lifeboat, Dyfed Powys Police, Mid and West Wales Fire Service and other local resources.
“The search resumed at first light this morning and is continuing.”
Dyfed-Powys Police, Angle RNLI and the Coastguard have continued searching for the missing man this morning.
Angle RNLI's Tamar class all-weather lifeboat Mark Mason was launched at about 5.30am today (Monday) to help with the search.
The lifeboat made an extensive search of the Waterway from Neyland up river past Lawrenny, Llangwm and Hook to the junction of the Eastern and Western Cleddau.
Neyland Yacht Haven and the fire services were among those involved in the search yesterday (Sunday).
Yacht Haven staff received a call at around 3.30pm from Neyland Yacht Club, asking them to assist as they are based nearby.
Two boats were launched to search the water, with the search extending towards Burton as weather conditions worsened, and the tide increased.
Yacht Haven staff also conducted a search of the waterside.
The fire service arrived at the incident between 4.49pm and 4.54pm, with two appliances and a boat from Milford Haven, with support from a crew from Pembroke Dock.
The crews assisted in searching the water and on the shoreline.
