Division five west: Pembroke Dock Harlequins 17-10 Neyland
PEMBROKE Dock Harlequins finally broke their season’s duck in division five west with this hard-fought victory over near neighbours Neyland in an absorbing clash at Bierspool.
Yet it was the Quins who made the brighter start in front of a good crowd when quick hands and a clever switch of direction by Mark Riley allowed full back Gregg Miller to put winger Delme Bateman in at the corner.
Riley missed the difficult conversion and was unlucky with a long-range penalty attempt which rapped the crossbar and was scrambled clear – but was again involved alongside Steve Hamer and Adam Collins before full back Miller sliced over for an unconverted try.
Both sides had further chances before the Quins fought back near the interval as flanker Alex Pearce scored a try which fly half Adam Cawley converted.
Good work after the interval by Mark Davies, Joe Powell and skipper Barry Parsons set up the chance for the Quins to take the lead when scrum half Arian Heath sliced over from close range and again Cawley added the extra points.
Cawley also notched a penalty to nudge the Quins 17-10 ahead and that is how the scoreline stayed until the final whistle from referee Jackie Boswell (Llanelli).
