St Clears 6
UNDERDOGS St Clears marched into the second round of the Senior Cup after producing a stunning display to emphatically defeat Narberth in their own backyard.
The undoubted Saints cup hero was striker Steve Thomas who bagged five goals and assisted with the sixth to stun the Bluebirds.
On the opening day of the season both these sides met with the current unbeaten league leaders winning 6-3, but Craig Weston's Saints certainly did their homework in this shock cup result.
The visitors were awarded two penalties in the opening 20 minutes, both handball incidents involving Bluebirds defender Jamie Flegg. Thomas made no mistake with both efforts from 12 yards.
Thomas completed his hat-trick in the 40th minute before Dean Morris replied just before the break for the hosts.
Five minutes after the break and player/manager Matthew Price was fouled inside the area. Tony Evans took responsibility and comfortably converted from the spot to put his side right back in it.
Five minutes later and deadly Thomas drilled in a fourth that gave his side a 4-2 lead.
Ian Derbyshire profited with a fifth in the 80th minute, and two minutes from full time Thomas turned two defenders on the edge of the box and duly rifled an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net to put the icing on the cake for the super Saints.
"I'm really proud of the boys," said St Clears boss Craig Weston. "Steve was untouchable and he really took his goals brilliantly. I don't think they can have any complaints with the result as we were the better team."
Narberth player boss Matthew Price said: "I'm bitterly disappointed in the manner that we lost. This result is a reality check and we have to work a lot harder when things are not going our way to win any silverware this season."
