12:02pm Sunday 24th November 2013
LAST Friday, the club held a Ball to celebrate their centenary year; it was held at Beggars Reach Hotel when 180 members and their guests attended.
Centenary club captain John Price welcomed everyone before handing over to Gareth Rees to say grace; Gareth was captain of the club in 1978 and is only survived by three other previous club captains; Arthur Elder 1963; John Winter 1967 and Peter Harries 1973 all who were unable to attend.
After an excellent meal John and Club President Chris Davies then cut the centenary cake which was donated by lady club members Margaret Hicks and Barbara Phillips and was made by Barbara’s sister Elizabeth Rees of Solva.
The speeches were short; firstly made by John Price who thanked all the staff of the club for the way that they carried out their duties in a very busy year; Fran the administrator; Barry and Emma and their staff for providing excellent food throughout the year; to Kevin; Stephan and Edward who has provided the club with a course to be proud of and not forgetting Matthew and Elliot in the pro shop for their service throughout the year. John went on to thank Andrew Rees for printing all place cards for tables; Donald Forrest for all the work he did in organising the event he thanked Donald’s wife Debbie for all the table arrangements; Margaret and Barbara for the cake and last but not least to Mike and Jill and their staff of Beggars Reach Hotel for providing an excellent meal and service.
Chris gave a brief summary of the centenary year; which included a lot of highs for the club who had turned a big loss in 2012 to a profit in 2013. As far as Chris was concerned since Barry and Emma has joined the club with their excellent catering facilities the club has certainly moved forward to the next level to such that the bar takings was up by nearly 50 percent on previous year.
The highlights of 2013 centenary year was the club hosting a lot of excellent tournaments and competitions especially the Welsh Team Championship, which the Milford team narrowly lost in the final by three matches to two to Wrexham golf club.
The Golf Union on Wales was little bit anxious getting near to the event and wondering if such a small club like Milford Haven would cope; but the club exceeded their expectation by the quality of the course; organisation and service which was provided over the four days. Chris raised a toast to the next 100 years.
The evening ended with excellent live music from local male and female duo Tracy and Tony Ashbridge “Heads over Heels” who was backed by the Marc Devonald disco sounds.
