Gents

ONCE again the weather intervened on Saturday, this time with the postponement of the February monthly medal which was to be sponsored by Alex Youds.

The course was opened and in place of the medal round a stableford competition was organised. The monthly medal will now be played at a later date.

Thirty-eight gents turned up to play in the stableford competition; considering the weather the course was in remarkable condition, with greens in excellent.

There were good scores returned with Karl Read on top of the list to win the competition with 40 points.

Centenary Captain’s Presentation

LAST Saturday, a presentation of a scrap book and a photograph album was presented to Centenary Club Captain John Price by Club Captain Gwyn Scale and Owain Picton who prepared both keepsakes. Owain stated that he has presented 16 past captains with scrap books and also 14 of those captains also received photograph albums as a memory of their years in office. This was Owain’s last year of preparing the mementoes as he is standing down as press secretary in the next couple of weeks as soon as another person is appointed to take over the position. Owain has been press secretary for over nine years and has decided to have a break from administration at the club after 19 years in total including committee duties; chairman of competitions; handicaps and fixtures for 15 years; he has also been treasurer of the junior section since 1996 and intends to continue with these duties.

Ladies

LAST Sunday, 15 Ladies played in their first tournament of the year being a Texas Scramble with teams consisting of three players per team.

Considering the atrocious weather the tournament was played in beautiful sunny weather with the course having dried out some with the greens in excellent condition.

The winning team consisted of Margaret Hicks, Liz Durward and Barbara Phillips.

Presentation was carried out by captain Pat Evans.

The Ladies will be playing their Tuesday competitions as normal with their next main tournament will be the Jubilee Foursomes to be played on Sunday, March 2, with the draw at 11.45am in the locker room.

Storm damage on the course

GALE force winds again have damaged the course in the last week of storms; chairman of greens Lyndon Brown said: “Over 100 trees have been uprooted with some very well established trees falling to the high winds and to clear the course will take some time, but the course will remain open as the work is being carried out.”
