OAKWOOD Theme Park played host to more than 250 charity runners and supporters as part of the Sport Relief Mile event on Sunday, March 23.

There were different distances for people to enter: one mile, three miles and six miles with all monies raised going towards Sport Relief.

Although final figures for the total of money donated will not be officially confirmed until next month, organisers already know that several thousand pounds have been raised.

The race was officially started by Councillor David Pugh, PCC Cabinet member for Economy Tourism and Communities.

“I was delighted to be able to support the Sport Relief event staged at Oakwood Theme Park,” he said.

“Oakwood is a brilliant and safe location for these type of charity events and I am pleased Dominic Jones and his staff have shown such commitment and support for what proved to be a well organised and attended fun run, raising funds for such a worthwhile charity.

“I know Oakwood are keen to continue working with the local communities in their charitable endeavours and I will continue to help and support them in the future,” he added.

Elly Hill, from E.H. Fitness and Personal Training in Tenby, helped the competitors warm up with a fun workout before the run.

Competitors of all ages and abilities took part ranging from two-year-old toddlers to an 87-year-old pensioner. There were also people in wheelchairs and using walking frames, as well as two dogs and four pushchairs.

Oakwood’s Dominic Jones, who also took part, said: “It was an amazing day with an incredible turnout.

“We had people of all ages and abilities taking part and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves.

“We devised the courses so that they actually ran through the middle of the theme park so the runners were able to enjoy a sneak preview before we actually open to the public next month.

“As well as a team of people from the park taking part, there was also a fantastic turnout from Sainsbury’s in Tenby.

“All in all it was a real family occasion for everyone involved with a great atmosphere – even if there were some tired looking people coming across the finishing line at the end!” he added.

Oakwood’s unique combination of attractions includes world-class roller, tower and sky coasters, spectacular family rides, children’s themed play areas, including the new £4m Peter Pan-themed Neverland, live music and events.

The park re-opens for the 2014 season on Friday, April 11.
