EASTER Monday sees one of the biggest meetings on the Welsh Point to Point calendar when hundred’s flock to the course at Lydstep to watch some competitive racing throughout the day, writes Maria Evans.

For one jockey this meeting will be extra special having had to miss this meeting, her local meeting, for the last two years, with what was initially thought a career ending injury.

Two years ago Jodie Hughes, who was then Welsh Lady Champion jockey a year earlier, suffered a horrendous fall where she shattered her left wrist.

“As time went on, I was frustrated just watching horse’s race, and knew I really wanted to race again. I felt I wasn't quite ready to stop just yet, so almost turning 30, I promised myself I would just ride in bumpers. After racing in two, I realised how much the jumping actually meant to me, such a thrill. So I rode in a few hurdles which helped my confidence – so much so I got my Point to Point licence again.”

Hughes is hoping for a successful day on Easter Monday where she will be riding for her partner Paul, father Graham and loyal owner Eric Clough.

“I am itching for a winner, I dream of that feeling again. Achieving that, after my injury, would make all the pain, time, effort and waiting worth it.”

As always there are bumper entries for the meeting – first race is at 1pm, where entry £10 car and driver, £5 per person with under 16's free when accompanied by an adult.
