Clarbeston Road 2

Solva 0

CLARBESTON Road clinched two goals in the first period of extra time to capture the Second Division Cup against determined Solva at the Bridge Meadow.

After a stalemate over 90 minutes the final sprung to life in the first period of extra time. Richard Bevan broke the deadlock in the 93rd minute, the striker worked some space on the edge of the 18-yard box and drilled a low shot past the despairing dive of Solva keeper Chris Davies.

This was a decisive moment, but things went from bad to worse for Peter Cole’s Solva outfit, as minutes later they were reduced to ten men as referee Helmut Reinhardt issued a straight red card to Gareth Thomas who clattered Road’s Matthew Fox from behind. He could have no complaints with the referee’s decision.

The extra man gave Road the incentive to go for the jugular and they did, adding a decisive second goal when keeper Chris Davies bundled over Bevan for a definite penalty. Luckily, for the skipper and keeper he was issued only a yellow card as Reinhardt showed common sense as he could have gave him red. Up stepped Jason Griffiths to drive the ball emphatically into the back of the net from 12 yards.

There were no further scares in the second period of extra time and Road skipper Dan Rees was delighted to receive the Senior Cup from Pembrokeshire Football League Chairman Dave Olyott at the end of a tense final.
