THE Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire Ladies held their 2014 Golf Championships at Carmathen Golf Club.

The format was one round of strokeplay, with the top eight qualifying players proceeding into the matchplay stages.

The strokeplay round was won by Rhian Walters, of Tenby & Derllys Court, with a fabulous gross 78 in very wet weather, resulting in her winning the Joan Gale Cup and a reduction in handicap. Runner-up in the strokeplay event was Vicki Thomas of Carmarthen with a gross 81, with Lucy Davies of Glyn Abbey coming third with an 82, resulting in her becoming the C&P junior champion.

The remaining five qualifiers from the strokeplay were Sophie Lovatt, Georgia Thomas and Heather Morgan all from Tenby, together with Nia Greville from Ashburnham and Jane Lindquist from Carmarthen.

The quarter finals played in the afternoon saw Rhian Walters winning against Jane Lindquist 4/3, Georgia Thomas winning against Sophie Lovatt 5/4, Heather Morgan winning against Lucy Davies 3/1 and Vicki Thomas winning against Nia Greville 2 up.

The following day saw the semi finals being played in the morning, although due to even worse weather, the matches were suspended for two hours due to the greens flooding. The greenkeepers managed to get the course playable for a 1pm resumption, with the matches eventually resulting in Georgia winning against Rhian and Vicki winning against Heather.

The final was played in the afternoon between Georgia and Vicki. It proved to be a very tight match with neither player being more than two holes ahead at any stage. After 16 holes Georgia had the advantage of being two holes up with two to play. This was soon reduced to one up when Vicki won the 17th. The 18th saw both players hit good drives and both followed them up with good second shots. Vicki's third shot managed to find the green, albeit a long way from the pin, whilst Georgia's third found the greenside bunker.

Georgia played her bunker shot to within three feet of the flag, while Vicki's long putt came up short. Georgia's putt then stopped short of the hole and was conceded for a par, resulting in Vicki having a putt to extend the match to the 19th. Her putt however, stopped right on the edge of the hole, resulting in the hole being halved. Georgia won a tight match one up.
