Cresselly get the better of high-scoring derby draw

12:01pm Tuesday 3rd June 2014

Carew (187 for 6) drew with Cresselly (198 for 6)

MATCHES between those old rivals are traditionally hard fought and this latest local derby was no exception as Cresselly built up a challenging total which Carew looked likely to pass at one stage when Nick Scourfield and Simon Wood were going strong in a stand of 145.

But Cresselly applied the squeeze in the field and Carew were unable to manage the 16 runs needed from the final over – but were never in danger of defeat.

Cresselly’s early runs came from captain Phil Williams (44), Iwan Izzard (16) and Simon Cole (20) as they stood at a less than happy 95 for 5 but then this season’s newcomer Mike Shaw (41) and debutant Brad McDermott Jenkins (transferred from Lawrenny) doubled the score as the latter top-scored with 53 to show what an asset he is going to be.

Ceri Brace (2 for 42) and Sean Whitfield (2 for 27) led the Carew bowling attack after recent respective returns from Pembroke and Saundersfoot, whilst cousins Rhys (1 for 37) and Tom Davies (1 for 58) were the other Carew wicket-takers on the day.

Tom Murphy confirmed his growing maturity with a 4 for 47 haul for Cresselly, supported by Stefan Jenkins’ 2 for 35, but Wood (five fours and two sixes in his 73) and Scourfield (three fours and a six in his 67) kept Carew in with a chance throughout.

Umpires: Trefor Evans & Steve Blowes.

Scorers: Julie Davies (Carew).
