Dyfed Junior Championship - Cardigan

Eight Milford Haven juniors competed in the Dyfed Championships in Cardigan, and though the rain stopped just in time for the first tee off, the strong easterly winds made scoring very difficult all day.

In the first round, defending champion Brandon Cooper faltered in the wind, and a ten on the par four fifth all but ended his chances of retaining his crown. Abe Forsyth kept hitting the ball straight - as is his way - and played to his handicap in the morning, keeping him in the hunt for the Under-13 Trophy, but it was Josh Lewis who was setting the course alight with a fine display of ball striking and putting to end the first round in third place, and within striking distance of the leader.

In the second round, with strong winds, and Josh's challenge faltered, but defending champion Brandon Cooper showed his quality by shooting gross 73 - equal low round of the day, and earning an afternoon gross prize and third place overall. Junior captain Calum Day played well in round two, shooting under his handicap and winning the afternoon net prize, whilst Abe Forsyth kept showing his star quality with a second successive 84 gross (just 9 over CSS), which would be more than enough to bring him the Alan Scott Trophy for the Under -3 Dyfed Champion.

In the 18 hole competition for 20 handicap and over, Ben Fairburn shot a creditable 34 points, and Ben Fawcett made light of the conditions by romping to victory in this catergory with 42 points - and sustaining a hefty handicap reduction in the process.

Well done to all the boys who represented Milford, on and off the course, with many of them (the two Ben's, Jay Power) playing in a Championship Tournament outside Milford for the first time.
