Pontardawe Town 0

Haverfordwest County 5

A FOUR-goal blast midway through the first half set the Bluebirds on the road to victory, with Jordan Follows and Darren Griffiths scoring a brace apiece and brother Dale’s second-half header setting the seal on the win.

The Blues were on top from start to finish and played well throughout the side. Craig Morris and his back four were secure and Antonio Facciuto had a fine game, as did Chris O’Sullivan and Nicky Palmer in the centre of midfield and, in particular, Declan Carroll in a forward midfield position. Follows was making a number of good runs and Griffiths bustling at the home defence, with one 17th-minute shot hitting a post before his second attempt was ruled out for offside.

The game was one-sided even before Pont were hit by a three-goal burst between the 22nd and 26th minutes. First of all a long ball in from the right was headed back across goal by Sean Pemberton for Follows to nod in. Two minutes later Carroll played Griffiths in for the second, and after just two more minutes, Follows headed in from a Griffiths cross.

There was another fine goal after 42 minutes, when Griffiths’ first shot was parried but he drove the rebound in from an acute angle.

The one second-half goal was a good one. Chris O’Sullivan’s right-wing corner swung over towards the far touchline and was played back in by Greg Walters for Dale Griffiths to crack in his header. There could easily have been further goals as both Walters and Sam Wilson went close, but Pont were able to keep the score to five in a game they could have lost by eight.

Next Saturday the Blues travel to play second-placed Monmouth Town in a real six-pointer.
