TWO Pembrokeshire girls completed an epic trek for charity last month.

Jenny Blakiston, of Porthgain, and Helen Tegg, of Stepaside, took on a 26 mile horse ride across the county to raise money for SPANA, a society that helps improve the living conditions for animals abroad.

The pair were joined by 27 other riders, and the route (designed by Danielle Glaister of Templeton) incorporated Reynalton, Templeton airfield, Narberth, Robeston Wathen, Canaston Woods, Jeffreyston, and back to Reynalton.

There was also a brief stop at Blackpool mill, where some riders were picked up, and others enjoyed refreshments supplied by the Sloop Inn.

"Everything went perfectly," said Jenny, who was prompted into organising the event after a recent trip to Indonesia. Helen meanwhile, regularly visits Africa, and both have become concerned about the lack of education for animal owners abroad.

"The weather was good and all the road marshals did a fantastic job, and had collection pots with them the whole day."

Jenny added the pair wanted to thank Danielle for the route, and Steve Glover, a local farrier who was on hand throughout the day to attend to loose shoes on the horses. Meanwhile, Fiona and Robert Burchmore allowed one of their fields to be used as a car park, and Francis Burke helped supply water for the horses at regular intervals. Others instrumental during the day were Paul Worcester, who drove the trailer during the event, and Stephen Craddock and Anna who organised the marshalling.

"We don't know our final amount raised yet but we are hoping for around £2000 mark," said Jenny.

"And we plan to make this an annual event."
