Gents

A FIELD of 61 competed on Saturday for the Russell Baynham Shield 0-14 and Ford Trophy 15-28. There was strong competition and impressive scoring once again reflected in a course standard scratch of 69.

Leading the way in the 0-14 category was early starter Richard Hull with an inspired nett 65 followed by Chris Day with a 68. There was a new face winning the 15-28 category. Tony Hughes proved too hot to handle with a magnificent nett 63 despite the best efforts of Richard Brock and Dai Humphreys with 64 and 65 respectively.

Twos winners were Richard Hull, Jake Lewis, Mike Anderson, James Picton, Jeff Button, John Skelhorn, Peter Fowler, Tony Hughes, Brian Morgans and Chris Oliver.

There were some significant handicap reductions with Handicap Secretary Dai Humphreys tasting his own medicine and losing 2 shots. Hardest hit was Tony Hughes who lost 3 shots and will now play off 23. Others losing shots were Richard Brock 18-16, Wayne Cooper 17-16, Richard Hull 11-10, P J Thomas 20-19 and Howard Webber 18-17.

Seniors

LAST Tuesday, the seniors played a stableford competition which was a qualifier for handicaps; there were 31 players who took part; on a nice day for golf; with the greens starting to recover after being hollowed cored but this did not seem to matter to some of the golfers as eight players returned scores of 40 points and over.

Michael Ballentine won the competition with an extraordinary score of 48 points, which meant that 20 handicapper Mike played to a handicap of 12; the computer reduced Mike’s handicap down by 3 shots to 17.

Excellent scores were also returned by Gwyn Scale (44 points with 24 points out and back)); Brian Mitchell 43 points (25 points on front nine); Owain Picton 42 points; Winston Price 42 points; Brian Keen 42 points.

Twos winners were Brian Keen; Richard Setterfield; Clive Wheeley who all had their twos on the par three 8th Hole “Docs” with Bobby Graham and Owain Picton hitting theirs on the par three 10th Hole “Boundary”.

With all the excellent scores returned this made the Course Standard scratch for the day increase from 39 points to 40 points which meant that the following players had their handicap adjusted; Michael Ballentine from 20 to 17; Brian Keen from 18 to 17; Brian Mitchell from 13 to 12; Winston Price 23 to 22; Gwyn Scale 16 to 15; with Rolly Council going backwards from 12 to 13 along with Ken Edwards from 13 to 14.

The presentation was carried out by Martyn Price seniors’ captain.

Last Thursday, the seniors travelled over the Cleddau Bridge under the captaincy of Martyn Price to play South Pembs golf club in their last seniors’ friendly match of the season; seven pairs contested the match; which resulted in a win for the home team by five matches to two; the two wins for Milford were by Gwyn Scale and Michael Ballentine winning 1 up and Owain Picton and Gerald Charles who won three and two. The other players representing the team were Martyn Price and Mike Durward; Rolly Council and John Laugharne; John Clark and Geoff Davies; Brian Mitchell and Billy Hier; Brian Keen and Dick Wooding snr.

In the final of the Esso Val French individual knockout cup congratulations to Richard Brock who beat Dick Wooding snr two and one; also congratulations to 88 year old Dick Wooding for reaching the final and by taking a few good scalps on the way.

There will be counting stableford competitions which are open to all full members on the following Tuesdays; 7; 14; 21; and 12 October teeing off after the ladies at 11.15 am.

Ladies

LAST Tuesday, 14 ladies played in their weekly tournament in lovely weather. The winner was the Lady Captain Pat Evans with 40 points, and the runner-up was Cheryl Eva with 39 points, which resulted in them both having their handicap reduced by one shot. There were two twos recorded and these were Eileen Davies on Hole #6 and Liz Durward on Hole #16 who shared the kitty.

On Saturday, a team of ten ladies travelled to Garnant to play their last C&P League match of the year. None of the ladies had played the course before and came away with a resounding win of 4 and a 1/2 matches in the five games they played. The team consisted of Lady Captain Pat Evans, Jackie Skelhorn, Liz Durward, Barbara Phillps, Keri Broome, Enid De Wolf, Pauline Summons, Ivy Jenkins, Pearl Slate and Maeve McGee. The ladies from Garnant had prepared a lovely cold buffet themselves after the match and warmly welcomed the Milford Haven ladies.

On Sunday, September 21, some of the juniors went to the Welsh Open at Celtic Manor, as guests of Golf Development Wales. They attended the GDW Street Golf stand and persuaded many of Europe's top golfers to part with their golf equipment, and had a thoroughly enjoyable day. Milford Golf Club are very proud of the manner in which these youngsters conduct themselves, and they are a privilige to take to such occasions.
