Pat and Karen win pairs competition

Gents

Harold Woodford Foursomes

THE strong wind and restriction on use of buggies combined to reduce the entry for this difficult competition requiring alternate shots to be played.

Nevertheless there were some outstanding scores returned in the very testing conditions. It was the longstanding partnership of Paul Kingston and John Price who showed their class with a superb 77 nett 66 comfortably pushing the new pairing of Jack Jenkins and Barry Harding into second place with their solid 88 nett 69, Lea Nicholas and Ian McCarthy took third place with a gross 80 nett 69.5.

Twos winners were Council/Scale, Fairburn/Owen, Hull/Tony Hughes and Davies/Picton.

This week is the traditional end of season needle match Docks v Town with the teams led by the Captain and Vice Captain. The format is matchplay with the pairings chosen on the day. For those not yet down to play the lists are still up in the locker room. Players are asked to meet in the clubhouse for 10am for refreshment when the teams can be finalised.

Ladies

A worthy achievement to report in the Ladies Section is that on Wednesday, October 8 Lady Captain Pat Evans and her golfing partner Karen Pullen travelled to Ashburnham Golf Club to play in the finals of the West Wales Ladies Golfing Association Jubilee Foursomes which has to be played on a championship course against two ladies from the Gower Golf Club. Pat and Karen had to give their opponents ten shots, and it was a very tough match played in high winds, rain and thunder in between spells of erratic sunshine. Both teams had supporters from both clubs walking the course in support of their respective ladies. Despite Pat and Karen being three down on the 11th hole, they managed to pull it back to all square by the 15th hole, then won 16th and the 17th holes to clinch the win and a proud moment for Milford Haven Golf Club. They will be officially presented with the trophy at the WWLGA's annual AGM/Luncheon at the Ivy Bush, Carmarthen next month.

Last Tuesday, ten ladies played in their weekly tournament in mild conditions. There were good scores recorded and the winner was Pauline Summons with 43 points and the runner-up was Margaret Hicks with 41 points who won on countback from Pearl Slate and Keri Broome both with 41 points.

Last Sunday, 14 ladies turned up to play in a Texas Scramble which is always a fun format, and again, the weather was mild and dry. The winning team were Lady Captain Pat Evans, Karen Pullen and Enid De Wolf.

Juniors

A busy weekend with three junior golf competitions taking place on Saturday.

Captain Calum Day pipped Harley Holmes by a point to claim the Variety Club Trophy, fittingly winning the final individual trophy of his captaincy.

In the seven-hole competition, Jack Jenkins romped to victory with 18 points, receiving a handicap reduction in the process. A very strong three ball of Jack, brother Bobby and Jayden Morgan won the team competition.

In the inaugural mini golf Saturday competition, scoring was very good. Liam Williams came second on count-back, and the winner was Ollie Vaughan-Harries, with a masterful display around the greens. There are another four weeks scheduled this year, next Saturday being the next date, so a winter-league will be played for during these weeks, with points each week allocated to participants.
