Swansea City 2 – 1 Arsenal

Swansea City came from behind to secure a famous win over Arsenal at the Liberty Stadium.

The Gunners took the lead in the 63rd minute when Alexis Sanchez scored his 12th Premier League goal of the season.

However, Gylfi Sigurdsson equalised with a sensational free-kick from 30-yards out in the 75th minute, and three minutes later substitute Bafetimbi Gomis headed home the winner, the striker scoring his first goal in the Premier League.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was not a happy man at the final whistle; his team threw away a three-goal lead against Anderlecht in midweek - sacrificing two Champions League points as it finished 3-3 at the Emirates. The Gunners surrendered a one-goal advantage at the Liberty Stadium and lost three precious points to the Swans.

This fantastic result saw Garry Monk’s team leapfrog The Gunners as they moved up to fifth place in the table in their best start since joining the Premier League.

The Swans came into this clash without midfield stars Wayne Routledge, Nathan Dyer, both with groin strains, and the suspended Jonjo Shelvey missing from their starting line-up. Federico Fernández was also missing in the heart of the Swans’ defence and he was replaced by Kyle Bartley, who was outstanding against his former club alongside rock-solid skipper Ashley Williams.

Swansea’s man of the match was Jefferson Montero, the left sided midfielder played havoc with young Gunners right back Calum Chambers, the England international was terrorised by the Ecuador international all afternoon.

There was an early scare for the Swans when skipper Williams over-stretched, but he came through the rest of the match with flying colours.

Wilfried Bony’s header from inside the box was an easy take for goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. Bony had a penalty claim waved away by referee Phil Dowd, the striker backed into Chambers and ended up in a heap inside the box. Sigurdson's wicked free-kick was desperately cleared by Chambers' header for a corner.

The Swans pressed and Montero forced a terrific near-post save by Szczesny. Montero, Neil Taylor and Bony worked space for Marvin Emnes to strike a low drive straight at Szczesny.

Just before the break Arsenal squander scoring chances as Danny Welbeck was thwarted close range by Swans keeper Lukasz Fabianski. Ashley Williams cleared with a header and Aaron Ramsey struck an instinctive first time volley from the edge of the box that whistled past Fabianski's right hand post.

The visitors started the more positive in the second half and were rewarded when Sanchez struck following a flowing move that included Kieran Gibbs, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Santi Cazorla and Welbeck, the latter intelligently squared the ball to Sanchez, who was in acres of space and he made no mistake with an eight yards finish. Arsenal fans were chanting  'one nil to the Arsenal' as the rained bounced off the Liberty surface.

Garry Monk didn’t panic and introduced youngster Modou Barrow in place of Emnes, for his debut, the winger made a penetrating run into the Gunners half and was scythed down by Gibbs. From the resulting free-kick Sigurdsson equalised with an absolute beauty. Gomis replaced Bony, and the striker made an immediate impact as he headed home Montero’s by-line cross to secure a thoroughly deserved victory. The Jack Army had the final say at the final whistle as the Swans toppled the Gunners and they were happy to be 'singing in the rain'.

Swans boss Garry Monk said: “I’m very pleased with the result. Despite injuries this squad has an inner belief and that came shining through today. A goal down I was always confident we would get something from this game. Gylfi’s free kick was stunning and Gomis’ header sealed three points against a strong Arsenal outfit.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wegner said: “I’m really disappointed with the result. We played well for 75 minutes and then switched off. We have to take this result on the chin and give Swansea credit.”
