TOMORROW’S Tour of Pembrokeshire is gearing up to be the biggest and best to date with a record number of entrants due to take part.

Overall, 1580 cyclists have pre-registered to tackle the 50, 75, or 100 mile routes around north Pembrokeshire.

And those involved have been gathering today at The Grove Hotel, St Davids, to confirm their registration, with the ‘expo’ open until 8pm tonight.

Staff from Pembrokeshire Bikes are also currently on hand to advise those involved on bike-fittings and nutrition, as well as on how to carry out repairs should the worst happen during the Tour.

For the first time ever, tomorrow’s event will consist of an Olympic champion with Chris Boardman, an individual pursuit gold medallist at the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona, set to take on the longest route with teammates from his Boardman’s Bikes company.

And the 46-year-old, who competed in four Tour De France races during the 1990’s, was present at the weekend launch today and told Telegraph Sport the event’s growing reputation inspired him to enter.

“I’ve heard really good things about the Tour of Pembrokeshire from friends and people who have taken part,” he said.

“As a group we (Boardman’s Bikes) try and get as many sportive events in as we can and this one really appealed to us.”

And Boardman, who has cycled in Pembrokeshire before for training purposes, said enjoyment would be the main goal for him tomorrow.

“I still like to push myself but it’s more important that we all have a good day out. Events like this are great because they so flexible.

“You can be a club rider looking to set a serious time or someone just looking to get into the sport or ride for leisure purposes.”

Organiser Peter Walker, of Pembrokeshire Bikes, added it was great to see everybody looking forward to the Tour.

“We’ve had so many people returning to the event from last year and newcomers as well. It should be another great day.”

Those cycling the 100 mile route will set off from The Grove between 7-7.30am in the morning, with the 75 mile entrants starting between 7.30am-8am. Those tackling the 50 mile route will start between 8-9am.
