THE highlight of the school sporting year; the Pembrokeshire Schools Track and Field Championships took place at Sir Thomas Picton School in fine conditions.

Unfortunately, due to a clash of fixtures this years’ event had to be held on a Wednesday much to the disappointment of parents, friends and the valuable assistance offered by the club officials of Pembrokeshire Harriers. It is hoped that the 2016 championships will resume as normal on a Saturday.

There were some fine performances by Pembrokeshire’s young athletes, with a total of 1ten records broken. With team competitions for Year 7, 8, 9 and 10/11 some age groups titles were decided with the final relay events of the afternoon.

As well as gaining points for the team the top three athletes also secured places in the Pembrokeshire team to compete in the Dyfed Championships this month.

Unfortunately, due to injury the Championships were without Cross-country International’s Matthew Williams (Milford) and Ysgol Dewi Sant’s Marinus Peterson. However, Abbie Williams (Pembroke) who also competed for Wales at XC and the London mini-marathon began the track season in style, claiming two middle distance records. With a gun to tape victory in both the 1500m (4.48.0) and the 3000m (10.40.2) and with still another year in the age group Abbie will be hoping for further success during the summer. Tasker Milward old boy – Jamie Dalton, saw two of his records vanish, with Dylan Phillips (YBG) clearing 1.56 in the Year 7 high Jump, and Will Hughes (STP) recording a distance of 39.60 in the Year 8 boys’ javelin event. The age group performance of the day had to be the STP year 8 boys who amazingly won eleven of the thirteen events to claim their section.

The overall team title eventually went to Sir Thomas Picton School who claimed six of the eight age group titles, with Greenhill second followed by Preseli School third.

Overall positions: 1, STP 67pts; 2, Greenhill 49pts; 3, Preseli 44pts; 4, Pembroke 43pts; 5, Milford 31pts; 6, Tasker Milward 22pts; 7, Ysgol Dewi Sant 20; 8, Ysgol Bro Gwaun 19.
