ENGLAND got their Investec Ashes test series campaign off to the perfect start in Glamorgan earlier this month - and for one fan from Pembrokeshire, there was double reason to celebrate.

During the lunch break of the second day, Community Cricket Coach for Pembrokeshire Rick Walton was presented with an ECB ‘Outstanding Contribution to Cricket Coaching’ award - as recognition of his tireless work with youngsters in the county.

Rick was one of 14 coaches, and one of only two from Wales, to receive his award from former England international, and current Glamorgan CC chief executive and managing director, Hugh Morris.

Rick and co were introduced to a sell-out crowd at the Swalec Stadium by Channel 5 cricket presenter Mark Nicholas

“I wasn’t aware I was being nominated for anything so it was a nice surprise when the letter came through,” said Rick, who took up his role four years ago after several years coaching the juniors at Haverfordwest CC.

“I do the job because I enjoy getting youngsters into cricket and not to win awards - but it was a real treat to be a guest on the second day."

Rick's work involves visiting numerous schools, and helping youngsters of all ability get started in the game.

"I only started coaching because my son started playing at junior level," he said.

"I never thought a job would come from it - but is has and now I love it."
