John Bailey Memorial Cup semi final:

Goodwick United 5-1 Fishguard Sports

THREE goals in eight first half minutes set Goodwick United up for a comfortable derby win over Fishguard Sports at Phoenix Park last night.

The game was still locked at 0-0 after 31 minutes, with Division Two side Fishguard more than holding their own, before goals from Scott Delaney, Johnny Horgan and Wayne O’Sullivan put the Phoenix Boys in control.

Jac Pepper and Horgan again added further strikes after the break, while Niall Kinsella replied from the spot for Fishguard.

And yet chances had been few and far between in a feisty opening period, with Horgan going closest when he was inches wide with a diving header.

But the home side took the lead when Adam Raymond whipped in a free kick from the left touchline, and Scott Delaney beat former Fishguard keeper Carl Woodhouse to flick a header home – despite protests from the stopper that he’d been fouled.

And just moments later it was 2-0, when Horgan cut in from the right, and hammered a superb left foot shot into the far top corner from 25 yards out.

Fishguard tried to respond as Mathew Lewis narrowly failed to get on the end of a Niall Kinsella free kick, and Ricky Bowen tested Gwilt from long range - before at the other end, Woodhouse denied O’Brien at his near post.

But from the resultant corner Goodwick struck again, as O’Sullivan headed home a Horgan corner.

Nigel Delaney’s men added a fourth immediately after half time when youngster Jac Pepper scored within a minute of replacing the injured Rob Morgans, as he latched onto Rhys Dalling’s pass before side footing home.

But to Fishguard’s credit, they refused to cave in, and after Woodhouse palmed away shots from Dalling and O’Brien, Owain Duggan’s men struck when Steve Lewis was bundled over in the area – and Kinsella beat Gwilt from the spot.

However, the visitors then went down 10 men when defender Llyr Tobin, who had been booked for a foul on Delaney in the first half, received a second yellow card after bringing down Karl Hedley.

Both sides created further chances late on, with Fishguard substitutes Matthew Morgan and Keegan Summers both drawing good saves from Gwilt, while Dalling and Pepper were narrowly off target for Goodwick.

And in the dying moments, the Phoenix Boys added a fifth, when Dalling’s cross found Horgan, who showed quick feet to turn and slot home past Woodhouse.

It means Goodwick will now aim to claim a second tournament win in as many weeks this Friday, when they face Cardigan Town, a side they beat 9-0 only last week in the Eddie Merry tournament.

The final will again take place at Phoenix Park, 6.15pm kick off.

The Costcutter League champions beat Letterston on penalties in their semi final on Monday, after the game had finished 2-2 in normal time.
