IN November 2014, Adam Collett weighed 20 stone and decided it was time to get in shape.

Barely 11 months later, and the Milford Haven man will compete for Wales in the Home Nations Powerlifting competition in Ashington on October 24.

Adam, who has lived in Milford all his life and attended School there, explained his meteoric rise: "I started weightlifting in the Meads, just for fitness more than anything else.

"And things just took off from there. I got into training and powerlifting, went to a development day to hone my technique, and entered my first competition this February."

Incredibly, the 30-year-old won his inaugural event despite basically being self-taught, as he triumphed in the 120kgs and under category in the Welsh Cup.

In April he competed in an England v Wales match at Cheltenham, before dropping down to the 105kgs and under category for the Welsh Championships in July, where he finished fourth.

He has since been selected to represent Wales in the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in Vancouver, Canada, but was unable to travel due to family commitments.

But he will head to Ashington next month despite having to fund his own transport, accommodation, and training costs.

"Anyone willing to help with sponsorship would be greatly appreciated," he said.

"I'm self taught and I enjoy the sport but have no funding which can take its toll."
