DALE Evans put on a courageous display against Sam Eggington, who retained the welterweight British and Commonwealth titles in Birmingham, winning on a unanimous point’s verdict that was televised by Sky Sports on Saturday night.
Evans, who trained out of the Merlins Bridge ABC as a youngster, has moved to train with Gary Lockett in Cardiff, since turning professional.
The 23-year-old accepted the fight with only ten days notice, he was a late stand-in for Frankie Gavin, the judges scored it 117-110, 117-110, 116-110 were a fair reflection, as the man from the St Clears area more than played his part in a bruising and bloody battle.
Evans had beaten Eggington when they fought in Prizefighter in January 2013, but Eggington, 21, has made a lot of progress since their last three round fight, as Evans has struggled to get fights that make it worthwhile for him financially.
Evans knocked Eggington down in the second round, catching the champion with a stunning right hand.
Evans said: I caught him with a heavy shot, not many fighters would have got up after that, but to his credit he recovered quickly.”
As the rounds went on Eggington looked stronger as Evans battled hard to conserve energy, the pair clashed heads with both sustaining cuts to the head.
Evans rocked Eggington again with another sweet punch in the last round, but the champion kept his composure to regain the British and Commonwealth titles.
Afterwards speaking about a possible rematch Eggington said: "I don't think I will be out again this year, but we will have to see what happens next year. If he is there, then why not? I felt a bit tired in the run-up and in the fight. I feel like I need a rest."
Evans says he still might have to quit boxing as he’s holding down a full time job and professional boxing is not earning him a decent living.
Evans added: “That’s the harsh reality; I need to be supported financially for me to continue my boxing career, if it doesn’t happen than I’ll have turn my back on the sport I love.”
