Carew 0

Goodwick United 2

TWO goals in the second half by Adam Raymond and Jonny Horgan kept Goodwick United’s unbeaten league record intact against rock bottom Carew.

This was the only game that went ahead in Division One on Saturday, Carew’s first team pitch was unplayable, but it was decided that the second team pitch was deemed playable.

Despite persistent rain, gale force winds and a heavy pitch, both teams coped admirably with the tough conditions and produced a very competitive match.

The visitors had first use of the wind, and as expected the Phoenix Lads had the majority of territory and possession, but they failed to carve out a decent scoring opportunity with Rooks’ goalkeeper Dan James, who did everything that was asked of him to shut out the visitors.

The hosts squandered a golden opportunity to take the lead midway through the first period, the ball fell to Alex Bayley at the far post, but the striker hurried his shot from eight yards out that agonisingly missed the target.

In the second period, the visitors began to turn the screw, with James pulling off a number of good saves to deny Rhys Dalling, Rob Morgans and Jonny Horgan.

However The Rooks finally cracked in the 70th minute, Horgan’s dangerous corner was met by Raymond’s powerful volley from 12 yards that flew into the back of the net.

Goodwick United boss Nigel Delaney and assistant Chris O’ Sullivan visibly sighed with relief, with just five minutes to go, Horgan then put the result beyond doubt, a one-on-one with James, Horgan calmly slotting past James to complete the scoring following an intelligent through ball by Dalling.

This positive result sees Goodwick United close the gap at the top of the table, only a point behind leaders West Dragons.

Finally, referee Angus Scourfield, deserves a mention as he had a good came in the middle, used common sense, and was accurate with his decision making.
