Angle 2nds 1

Pennar Robins 3rds 2

Pennar Robins 3rds secured a slender 2-1 victory against near neighbours Angle 2nds to lift the Fourth Division Cup in front of a good crowd at Monkton Lane.

With the slope in The Robins’ favour they got off to a flyer when they scored a fortuitous goal in the eighth minute, skipper Phil Thompson’s low drilled cross in the box rebounded off Angle defender Ryan Bowen for an own goal.

The Robins increased the lead four minutes later, when Gedion Hockin’s wicked corner in the area was headed back inside the six-yard box where Ryan Lucas reacted quickest to bury a firm shot into the back of the net.

Stunned Angle nearly pulled one back midway through the first period, Darren Mason’s clever back header from a corner was cleared off the line by Robins’ defender Paul Sly.

Pennar Robins were good value for their 2-0 lead at the interval.

The second half was hard fought with both teams trying to score, Pennar had two glorious chances to add to their tally, Craig Asparassa and Marco Valentine both denied with one-on-one with Angle goalkeeper James Corey.

Angle were given a lifeline when they were awarded a late penalty when striker Luke Wickland was brought down by Paul Sly inside the area, striker Wickland dusted himself off to emphatically beat Robins’ keeper Billy Drinkwater from the spot.

Deep in stoppage time Drinkwater flapped an audacious cross against the post and gather the rebound much to the relief of the Robins camp who nervously clung on for victory.
