Friendly rugby:
Bluestone RFC 34
Haverfordwest 2nds 5

BLUESTONE RFC secured their first win last Wednesday in their charity game against Haverfordwest 2nds.

The team was formed in early 2016 by members of staff from the National Park Resort which currently employs over 600 people. With a 365 day a year operation, some boys are unable to commit to local club sides because of shift patterns, so have formed a team with the aim of raising money for charity.

With over 30 players now registered, Bluestone has been delighted with the commitment of the squad, training once a week, and improving match by match.

After coming agonisingly close to their first win in Tenby earlier this month, Haverfordwest were next for Bluestone and despite wet conditions, Bluestone were rewarded for some early running rugby as Zac France-Miller crossed twice in the first 20 minutes to open up a 10-0 lead.

Haverfordwest had their chance to put points on the board but a long range penalty attempt drifted just wide.

The half ended with tries for Bluestone from Luke Griffiths-Dawes (2), Gethin Gibby, Dafydd Wright, and James Risley. The latter two were converted by Risley to put his side 34-0 up at half time.

However The Blues dug in after the break, and crossed themselves to make it 34-5.

The closing stages were marred by serious injury to Bluestone player Dale Etchels - with everyone at the club and Telegraph Sport wishing him a quick and full recovery.

Bluestone RFC manager Dan Gosnold said: “It was a real pleasure to play Haverfordwest RFC tonight and we would like to thank them for their hospitality.

“We’ve had the chance to raise more money for the Bluestone Foundation and Macmillan, which is the reason we play and is a fantastic cause.

“After coming so close last week against Tenby and losing by a point, and before that, losing by four points against Pembroke, it was great for the team to secure their first win.

“The morale in the team is brilliant and this result is a great confidence boost for the boys who have really gelled as a team.”
