GENTS

Saturday was by far the best day of the year with beautiful blue skies and a light breeze all of the umbrellas and the wet weather clothes locked away.

Fifty six members took part in the opening tournament of the year Captain’s team v the Vice Captain’s team a match play event.

This was formally known as the Navy Shield and first played for in 1973. When the number of ex-Navy Servicemen decreased it was change to the Combined Services at the end of the 1980’s. This was an annual match played between the club and all ex-service members to mark the start of the new season. This competition was changed in 2010 to Captain’s team v Vice Captain’s team because of the dwindling numbers of ex-servicemen.

The Captain’s team proved too strong for the Vice Captain’s team this year with a winning score of nine and a half to four and a half. An excellent day was had by all on the course followed by a full clubhouse throughout the evening.

A big thank you to Wyn and Rachel and their staff for keeping us all fed and watered. Thanks to Phil Davies, Captain of the Senior Section for standing in for the club Vice Captain Ken Davies.

Next week is the Alford Cup a bogey competition. Well played the Captain’s team this week, commiserations to the Vice Captain’s team.
