ST Clears were finally able to celebrate their Division Three West A title success with the trophy on Saturday as they were presented with the silverware by the WRU.

The Carmarthenshire Saints finished their league season with a 7-0 win over Cardigan on April 1, but their title win wasn’t confirmed until a week later when The Teifisiders were beaten by Milford Haven.

On Saturday, WRU District Representative Anthony John visited the club to hand the trophy over to head coach Mike Jones, club captain Mathew Lewis, and the rest of the squad.

And afterwards Jones said his side had exceeded expectations in his first season at the helm – and pinpointed the wins he felt stood out during the campaign.

“I’m absolutely delighted that we’ve achieved promotion - in all honesty we aimed for a top four finish at the start of the year with a view to pushing for promotion next season.

“Beating Laugharne away was massive. Before this season St Clears had never beaten them in their history so to do the double was fantastic.

“But the win that was the real turning point was beating Pembroke 18-17 away. We had seven boys out from the previous week, people playing out of position, and we ground out a win after a massive squad effort and it was then I felt we could challenge for the title.”

The previous Division Three West A winners, Haverfordwest, were relegated straight back down this year from Division Two West, a fate Jones said his squad would be determined to avoid.

“Having watched some Division Two games this season I feel we will be competitive.

“Our main focus is to stay up. Only time will tell but we have a cracking bunch of players and the important thing now is to keep going.

“We do that and success will come with it.”

After the presentation and squad photos, the club held a barbecue to which supports and sponsors were all invited as a thankyou for their contribution to the success of The Saints.
