MILFORD Haven Karate Club travelled to Neath on the weekend to compete at the first leg of the Welsh Karate League for 2017.

Kevin John fought in the veterans section after a year out with injury and reached the final to take an early 3-0 lead. He was in control at one point but lost on a decision after the match was tied after normal time, having to settle for a creditable silver.

Next up was Rowland Adams, who only took up the sport two years ago, but fought superbly through the rounds to storm into the final of the novice kumite in his first competition. He took a superb gold medal beating two 21 year olds on the way.

Club instructor Kevin said it was great to be back on the mat after injury.

“Fitness will have be worked on over the coming months as it ultimately cost me the gold,” he said.

“But special mention goes to Rowland. He has been a great training partner for myself and has reaped the rewards for it. He is hardworking and gives 100% and made a name for himself on the day.

“The fighters will not want to face him in leg two of the league.”

He added the club had been invited to fight at the IKU World Championships in Ireland in October.
