JAMES Bowen is following in elder brother’s Sean’s footsteps by picking up most wins as a novice rider and creating a British record for point-to-point victories.

James, 16, from Little Newcastle, is following in the family footsteps after setting a British record for point-to-point wins by a novice rider.

Bowen set the record with victory on the Bridget Lewis-trained Tinkers Hill Tommy at Chaddesley Corbett. It was his 26th win of the season.

That was one more than the totals managed by Nick Scholfield in 2007 and Rhys Flint in 2008.

And he backed up this form with another three winners at the Pembrokeshire Hunt point-to-point meeting in Trecoed on Saturday.

This was his local track and for Bowen, and ideal way to bow out – as the youngster will now turn conditional and ride under rules.

The first of Bowen’s treble came on Flying Eagle, trained by brother Mickey, in the four mile Men’s Open.

The second part of the treble came in the Open Maiden, as Bowen teamed up with David Brace to partner Delkantra to a fifteen length victory.

The final race on the card, the Intermediate, finished Bowens treble, with Cheltenham Mati coming home the easiest winner of the day.

The first race on the card, the Hunt Members went the way of Superman De La Rue and Connor Orr.

The Ladies Race went the way of Hannah Lewis and Golden Crisp, making trainer Tim Underwood’s trip from Kimblewick worthwhile.

The ten runner Restricted race went to January Don and Evan David, who is having his best season so far. With an official winning distance of only a nose, this was easily the closest finish of the day, with Ben Jones and Chasing Casey second.

Lisette Davies, riding the grey Taz won the Mixed Scurry race and the first of the two pony races went to Daniel Ellis, 12, on Clear The Track.

The second pony race was won by Jessica Llewellyn, 14, of Bargoed, riding Don’t Tell Dai.

Furthermore, in a major boost for the sport in west Wales - the meeting results meant James Bowen, Lorcan Williams and Ben Jones took the first three places in the Gentleman Novice Championship.
