AN annual tribute to a true legend of Hakin United will kick off tonight when the Joe Lennon Cup gets underway.

The tournament is now in its seventh year - and is held in memory of Joe, who died in December 2010, aged 60. He was renowned for his excellent work with the Hakin United junior section and credited for much of the club’s success when they won seven straight league titles between 1996 and 2003.

This year’s tournament consists of Hakin United, Herbrandston, Milford United, and Milford Athletic, and Hubberston, and has been organised by Vikings secretary Johnny Lewis.

Tonight, Hakin will face Herbie in the first semi final, with a 6pm kick off at The Obs - with the two Milford sides then meeting on Friday at the same venue.

All games will be refereed by Bernie Armstrong.

The final will then be held on Friday, August 4.

The original tounrament in 2011 provided a fairytale finish, when Joe's son Joff struck the winning penalty as Milford United beat Hakin in a shootout after the scores had finished 1-1 after normal time.

But since then The Vikings have taken a firm grip on the trophy, winning it for five successive years.
