Peter Lloyd, of Haverfordwest, is certainly making a name for himself competing in 50 plus age category at half and full triathlon distances.

The Hakin Community Primary School teacher is currently ranked fifth in the UK and 80th in the world. He’s also a qualified Ironman coach and a bike fitter with Mike’s Bikes.

A member of Pembrokeshire Triathlon Club, Team NBCC, Pembrokeshire Velo and Tri Activ Lanzarote.

Lloyd regularly competes in Lanzarote and qualified for the half Ironman distance World Championships in Bratislava held on June 2, after he finished sixth in Salou, Spain last year.

There were plenty of top names competing such as Alistair Brownlee, Stuart Hayes, Lionel Saunders, Michael Raelert, Emma Pallant and Lucy Charles, with the winners receiving €30,000.

Lloyd said: “The 1.2 mile swim was in the Danube, the 56 mike cycle on flat but extremely hot weather, and 49 degrees coming off the road with an air temperature in mid 30s, making the cycle and run extremely punishing.”

Many of the pros, including Brownlee and Hayes dropped out due to the difficult conditions.

Despite the high temperature Lloyd was pleased at finishing in 20th position in his age group in an overall time of 5:09 (swim 34 mins, 2:28 for the cycle and 1:58 for the run).

At the end of last month Lloyd travelled to Cardiff Triathlon which doubled up as the Welsh Olympic Distance Championship. This time in wet and greasy conditions around Cardiff Bay.

Lloyd won his age group, 50+ finishing in a time of 2 hours 13 minutes to finish 45th overall.

He is training hard for future half Ironman races in Poland, Dublin and Weymouth and is planning a full Ironman or maybe two in the 2018 season.
