FOUR Pembrokeshire players have helped the Cricket Wales Disability team to the final of a national competition.

Haverfordwest duo Kieran Williams and Joseph Newton, Neyland's Callum Power and Saundersfoot's William Malone have shone this summer.

Another Haverfordwest youngster, Ryan Lewis, has also been playing for the side and Cian Davies, now Whitchurch Heath, is originally from St Davids.

The quartet are set to feature for Wales against Essex in the final of the British Association for Cricketers with Disabilities County Championships at Kidderminster on September 3 (noon start).

Wales are aiming to repeat their Incrediball County Championship success in 2002 and 2008.

Captain Greg Pendleton, from Monmouth, hit 44 and was backed up by Clydach’s Ioan Martin (58 not out) and Whitchurch Heath’s Cian Davies (28 not out) as Wales claimed a thrilling victory against the Isle of Wight in the semi-finals.

In reply to the Isle of Wight’s 155 all out, a young Welsh side edged home with one ball to spare at Collington in Nottinghamshire.

Wales had progressed from the Midlands group after defeating Warwickshire by 17 runs and seven wickets.

They also recorded a 32-run win against Derbyshire Merlins.

Wales’ final group match at Derbyshire was cancelled because of a waterlogged pitch.

Essex enjoyed a dominant campaign in the South-East Group, beating Kent by 118 runs and 37 runs.

They crushed Sussex by nine wickets and 125 runs and Middlesex by 174 runs before booking their place in the final with a seven-wicket win against Staffordshire.

  • Les Randall, in conjunction with Sport Pembrokeshire - runs a development centre in Haverfordwest for cricketers with a disability. The centre is attended by adults and secondary school pupils.

The development centre is starting again this autumn and Les is urging any secondary schools or clubs in Pembrokeshire to contact him if they have players who are interested in playing and developing their cricket, and representing their country.

Les is also hoping to continue the good work in the senior schools of Pembrokeshire including Greenhill, Pembroke, Milford Haven and Haverfordwest.
