Welsh Veterans Cup Preliminary Round:
Nelson Cavaliers Over 40s 0
Hakin United Over 40s 3

A DOMINANT second half display secured Hakin’s passage into the quarter finals of the Welsh Veterans Cup - setting up a last eight tie away to Cambrian Consulting.

The sides stood goalless at the break, but a spectacular strike from Matthew Price broke the deadlock, before his strike partner Paul Jones and then Price again scored late on.

On a heavy surface, the visitors started in the ascendancy as Jones headed narrowly wide, and Leighton Edwards also went close.

And then 30 minutes in Malcolm Jones’ side wasted their best first half chance when the home side were penalised for handball in their own area - but Jones hit the post from 12 yards.

But then 20 minutes into the second half, it was Price who gave Hakin the lead in style, rifling home a right footed shot from outside the area.

The Cavaliers came close to levelling but were denied by a great save from Hakin keeper Jason ‘bomber’ Morgan - and it proved vital as moments later, Price broke free down the left and crossed for Jones to tap home from close range.

And with time running out, Jones returned the compliment, teeing up Price for his second.

What would also have pleased the away side was a clean sheet, with the now settled back four of Nigel Armstrong, Richard Bland, Nigel Delaney, and Adam Collins again impressing as a unit in front of keeper Morgan.

So Sunday, January 28, The Veteran Vikings go to Cambrian Consulting, a side they have already beaten 2-1 at The Obs this season in the league - and will have high hopes of winning through to the semi finals.

Their next league game is at home to unbeaten Merthyr Town at The Obs on Sunday, February 11, 2pm kick off.

Hakin United Over 40s: Jason Morgan, Nigel Armstrong, Richard Bland, Nigel Delaney, Adam Collins, Richard Nash, Gary Dawes, Michael McCarthy, Paul Jones, Matthew Price, Leighton Edwards.  Subs (rolling): Anthony Aldred, Robert Davies, Gerard Gray.
