John Bailey Memorial Cup Final: Goodwick United 8-1 Clarbeston Road

Goodwick United emphatically retained the John Bailey Cup as they warmed up for next season's Jubilee Cup by hammering Clarbie Road at Phoenix Park.

Bailey was a popular figure at the club and again, a large crowd turned out to honour his memory and help raise funds for Portfield School.

Goodwick reached the final with a 10-0 hammering of Prendergast Villa but Clarbie were amde to work hard before coming through 4-2 on penalties against Fishguard Sports.

But Clarbie should have taken the lead as Richard Bevan had a shot blocked by home keeper Carl Woodhouse, who then stopped the rebound attempt by Ben Stevens before Ben Barrett’s follow up went inches wide.

But Jordan Griffiths settled the Phoenix Boys with a crisp left-foot volley past Lee Scott – before Clarbie levelled from an inswinging corner by player/manager Matthew Ellis which beat Woodhouse and was helped over the line by Bevan.

Goodwick went in front again as Steve Dockerty was up-ended inside the box and Griffiths sent Scott the wrong way from the spot.

And Goodwick grabbed a third when Lee Hudgell swept play out to the right and Steve Dockerty managed to fire a low shot into the far corner despite a heavy tackle.

The home side then upped the intensity after the break as Griffiths’ goal-bound drive was tipped wide by Scott, but soon it was 4-1 when Johnny Horgan’s deflected shot found the net.

Griffiths completed a hat-trick with a right-foot drive and a clever low cross by Hayes allowed sub Tony Evans to drill home from close range to make it 6-1.

Another sub in Matty Delaney struck the woodwork, but Evans chipped in the seventh before Horgan completed the rout against a tiring Clarbie side.

Bevan did have a late chance for the visitors but it was Goodwick club official Rob Cousins who presented the trophy to home captain Scott Delaney to round off another good tribute to Bailey and his family.
