Two Pembrokeshire athletes have spoken to Telegraph Sport after taking to the international stage again this weekend.

For Heather Lewis and Caryl Jones, the European Athletics Championships in Berlin represented another huge achievement in their careers as they represented Team GB – just four months after competing for Wales in the Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast, Australia.

For Lewis, things unfortunately didn’t go to plan in Saturday’s 20KM Walk, as after a strong start, she was disqualified for receiving three technical warnings.

The race was delayed due to a gas leak but when it did get going, the 24-year-old Pembrokeshire Harrier was up with the leading pack for the first 4 kilometres, and was still inside the top 20 when her race was curtailed just short of the half way mark. The race was eventually won by Maria Perez, of Spain, in 1:26:36.

But regardless, Lewis remained positive and has vowed to learn from the experience.

“I had an amazing opportunity to race for Great Britain in the European Championships,” she said.

“I am so disappointed to have had a DQ but these things happen in racewalking. I took a risk going out with the front pack which unfortunately didn't pay off – but this has given me a huge platform to work on.

“I know I can build on this and the week has taught me a lot.

“Thank you to all the amazing support I have received at home and the ones who were on the side line cheering for me.”

Lewis added she had ‘really enjoyed’ the who event experience, and less than 24 hours later, was in the crowd to support Jones and co in Sunday’s marathon.

And Narberth born Jones, who lives in tavernspite, produced another gutsy run to finish 30th in 2:40:41, a season’s best performance and just over 14 minutes behind gold medalist Volha Mazuronak of Belarus.

“The race went as well as expected,” she said.

“I was in a group with girls who had a faster marathon time than me and I took it steady, I knew it was going to get hot and be a tough race.

“It’s been a really tough build up after the Gold Coast and doing two Championships back to back less than four months apart is hard - so I was never chasing a time, I wanted to place as high as possible for GB.

“I’m now looking forward to some rest.”

The Championships culminated on Sunday, with Team GB top of the medals table.
