A teenager competing in his first ever senior triathlon was crowned overall male winner at the Tenbi Go-Tri event.

Sixteen-year-old Tomas Griffiths, from Pembrokeshire Triathlon Club, came first in a field of 55 participants while competing at Pembrokeshire Leisure’s first ever mid-week Go-Tri event.

The race kicked off from the Tenby Leisure Centre - and as well as a win for Tomas, Catherine Lee was the first female to cross the line while Ben Jones and Lucy Jones were crowned male and female novice winners respectfully.

The aim of the event is to make triathlons accessible and achievable to all, a stepping stone to other triathlon events and to get more people more active more often.

Tomas couldn’t agree more and said the Tenby event was a great experience.

“I got into Triathlon when my ex-swimming coach Alison Willis suggested to have a go at Triathlon as she knew I could swim and also enjoyed cycling and running.

“I met my future coach, Rhys Thomas at Sir Thomas Picton School track one Saturday morning, really enjoyed the Tri-session and five years on, have been participating ever since.

“I have entered many of the local Junior Go-Tri Events but Tenby was my first Senior Go-Tri. I really enjoyed the experience, especially the cycle route.

“The comments I received from other competitors after the race were really positive and I’d definitely encourage anyone who is thinking about trying out Triathlon to have a go.”

The final Go-Tri event of the season takes place at Haverfordwest Go-Tri this Sunday, August 19.
