Jubilee Cup: Hakin United 1-3 Goodwick United

The first official silverware of the 2018/19 Pembrokeshire Football League season has gone to Goodwick United after goals from Lee Hudgell and Jordan Griffiths (2) gave them a 3-1 Jubilee Cup win over Hakin last night.

With the Conygar Bridge Meadow in its usual pristine condition, Hudgell's early goal was the only strike of a frantic first half, before the clinical Griffiths struck twice after the break as the Phoenix Boys took control.

Justin Harding's brilliant late free kick proved little more than a consolation for The Vikings.

Both sides went in with a host of regulars missing, with Goodwick actually fielding defender Patrick Hughes in goal with Casey Walters unavailable and the returning Carl Woodhouse not yet eligible.

But within 70 seconds Wayne O'Sullivan's side were ahead, as Griffiths drove towards the area before slipping in Hudgell, who made no mistake with a low right foot shot across James Manson.

That set the tone for an end to end first half, and moments later Goodwick threatened again when Jonny Horgan's left foot cross narrowly evaded Steve Dockerty.

At the other end Hakin striker Shane Walsh brushed off Llyr Tobin but Hughes came through his first test as keeper by blocking his angled shot with his legs.

The chances continued as Griffiths miscued in front of goal after Matty Delaney and Horgan had combined to tee him up - before Harding twice went close for The Vikings, cracking a right foot shot just wide of the top corner before firing narrowly over after a goalmouth scramble.

Craig Nicholson also had a long range effort punched away by Hughes but it was Goodwick who finished the half on the front foot - with Griffiths twice forcing Manson into good saves from the edge of the area.

The pace slowed down somewhat after half time but ten minutes in it was again the pairing of Hudgell and Griffiths who combined decisively, with the latter sharply turning and firing high into the net.

The youngster was also narrowly off target with a low free kick while Harding continued to carry Hakin's main threat, having a low shot spilt by Hughes but landing safely - while sub Camron Thomas headed wide.

Hughes kept his goal intact by again denying Walsh with his legs, and as The Vikings pushed forward, Goodwick took advantage of the extra space with both Hudgell and Griffiths off target from close range  - but then with five minutes left, Griffiths did make it three.

He latched onto Dockerty's through ball and dinked a shot into the net, despite Manson getting an outstretched hand to it.

In injury time Harding did get the goal his display deserved, and it came in superb fashion as he hammered a 25 yard free kick past Hughes and into the top corner.

But it was Goodwick skipper Stefan Hayes who received the trophy from League Chairman Steve Briers. And also significant for the club was a late substitute appearance from Dan Williams - and it was great for all to see him back in his first game for eight years after a serious neck injury sustained in 2010.
