Pembroke County Cricket Club Under 15s final: Cresselly/Stackpole (88-5) neat Hook/Llangwm (87-6) by 5 wickets

Cresselly/Stackpole (CS) came through a hard fought final with Hook/Llangwm (HL) to be crowned Pembrokeshire cricket's under 15s champions at St Ishmaels.

But only after a nervy finale which saw The Young Doves get home in the 19th over.

CS captain George Smith won the toss and asked counterpart Callum Jenkins to bat.

And Callum Jenkins and Lewis Miller made a good start with both hitting early boundaries, before George Smith turned the tide by bowling Miller (8) and taking a marvellous return catch to dismiss Jenkins (19).

Joe Phillips (15), Seth Willinton (7) and Finlay Elerick (12 - including one enormous straight 6) batted well but with Smith (2-5), Ben Callen (2-15), Josh Lewis (1-14) and Ben Davies (1-12) all taking wickets at important times, aided by some fine catches by Jack Perrins and Dan Jenkins, CS took control before James Price (7 not out) and Dillon James (1 not out) meant HL finished on 87-6.

But H/L then got the start the needed against a strong C/S batting line up, Lewis Miller taking the important wicket of George Smith with his first ball.

However, the experienced pair of Josh Lewis and Jamie Goldsworthy showed their class by batting sensibly against tight bowling, Lewis retiring on 35 retired and Goldsworthy (25) bowled by Jenkins after the score had moved to 77-1.

With both gone, H/L showed their character, and an inspired spell of 3-6 by James Price set up an exciting finale.

Despite the comeback, Ben Davies' 6 not out proved crucial as he held his nerve to hit the winning runs to rapturous applause - rounding off a final that was an excellent example of how cricket should be played at junior level.

In the presentations, Junior Organiser Martin Jones congratulated both sides on reaching the final and putting on a great game, saying both sides should be proud of their junior sections.

He also praised coaches Ryan Lewis and Jamie Phelps for their efforts, and thanked St Ishmaels for hosting the final, especiall groundsmen Mel Williams and Chris Bradshaw, and Wendy Bradshaw and Pat Williams who prepared food for the players.

Junior sponsor Colin John of Llewelyn Davies & Co Chartered Accountants were thanked for their valuable support and PCCC Chairman Paul Webb  and wife Janice together with President Nick Evans, were also in attendance.

The medals, runners up shield and winners trophy, donated by the families of the late John Bowen and Stan Richards (first played for in 1974) were presented by Kevin Bowen's son, whose sister Georgina  Morgan was also in attendance with the main award - presented by Ollie Rees, Great grandson of John.
