Ross shines for Wales

Ross Mayes from Templeton has recently returned from representing Wales at the Pony Club UK and Ireland Junior Regional Tetrathlon competition, held at Thornton Watless in north Yorkshire.

The 15-year-old is a member of Vale of Taf Pony Club and a student at Greenhill school, and was one of five boys and five girls selected from across north, south and mid-Wales to make up the Welsh team for the prestigious event.

Run over two days, the challenging four-discipline competition involves shooting, swimming, running and cross-country riding. This year, ten teams battled it out for the top spot, with the Welsh boys finishing a very creditable second, just behind the Republic of Ireland.

The girls also performed well, finishing third in their 14-strong team competition.

“The whole experience was just tremendous,” said Ross. “This was the first time I have been selected for the Welsh squad and it was a real honour for me and for Vale of Taf. Northern region did a superb job organising the competition and created a fantastic atmosphere.”
